National Volunteer Week was April 27 to May 3, with a theme “Volunteers Make Waves.” Quote from the volunteer.ca website: It highlights the power, impact, and importance of individual and collective volunteer efforts across Canada.

Like any small nonprofit organization, OFRA relies on volunteers to provide much-appreciated kindness to enrich the lives of residents.

This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Social was held on May 29. With busy schedules and unfortunately some spring flu outbreaks, the recognition of volunteers was delayed until recently. The social started with the Therapy Recreational and Activity team, with manager Heidi Slotegraaf and her fabulous team greeting the volunteers. Paul Belair, CEO, and Helinä McGrath, Executive Director of Care, greeted and handed out OFRA umbrellas for a rainy day.

The Ladies Auxiliary provided delicious sandwiches, coffee, pulla and delicious cake. The OFRA Foundation staff provided table service and help for the afternoon as it was a full house. After the refreshments, door prizes were raffled from the gift cache. The final door prize was a gravity lawn chair for the lucky winner to put their feet up.

OFRA has currently 187 volunteers on the roster. Volunteers provide a variety of activities, visiting residents, providing entertainment, helping in activities, and behind-the-scenes support. Prior to COVID, OFRA had 329 volunteers, but with such a lengthy shutdown of activities, OFRA has lost many volunteers. OFRA would like to see an increase in volunteers. Students requiring volunteer hours to graduate from high school, this would be a wonderful opportunity for them to give to the community.

Research has shown that volunteering offers a range of health benefits for those who give their time. It can provide a sense of purpose, increase overall well-being, and contribute to a more positive outlook. Volunteering is also highly flexible — whether it is dedicating a few hours each month, supporting a yearly event, or committing more time. Individuals can choose opportunities that align with their interests and availability.

As a volunteer myself, it just makes me feel good to give back. Social events like Vappu, Juhannus, Canada Day celebrations would not be as great if it weren’t for the help of volunteers.

A few years ago, OFRA purchased a para-bus to bring residents outside the home to the park, mall and other public attractions or events. However, OFRA is short on drivers. To be a driver, they need to be Class F classified or equivalent. OFRA is willing to pay for the medical and driver test if someone is interested in becoming a volunteer driver. For this opportunity and for all volunteer opportunities or questions about volunteering at OFRA, give Heidi Slotegraaf a call at 705-945-9987 ext. 203 or visit www.ontariofinnishresthome.ca and click on the “Volunteers” tab.
