For ten days every summer, Calgary transforms into Canada’s cowboy capital. Boots and cowboy hats replace business suits, and the city embraces its Western heritage during the world-famous Calgary Stampede.

While the rodeo remains the heart of the event, the Stampede offers much more than bucking bulls and horseback competitions. Visitors can spend an entire day exploring Stampede Park, where amusement rides, live music, agricultural exhibitions, horse shows, and Indigenous cultural performances create an atmosphere unlike any other festival in Canada.

Food is also part of the experience. Vendors compete to create the most unusual menu items, from pickle pizza and pickle cotton candy to deep-fried watermelon and doughnut burgers.

The afternoon rodeo draws tens of thousands of spectators to GMC Stadium. Events such as bull riding, saddle bronc riding, and chuckwagon racing showcase the skills, courage, and traditions of Western Canada.

As the sun sets, the Grandstand Show takes centre stage with live music, acrobatic performances, dancers, and a spectacular fireworks and drone show that lights up the Calgary skyline.

For many Calgarians, the Stampede is a tradition that has been part of the city’s identity for more than a century.

One of the most unique sights is the contrast between modern Calgary and its western roots: just steps away from the Scotiabank Saddledome, home of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, visitors can find horse barns and a massive rodeo arena.
