Spring is here, and the green lushness of sports fields around the city is inviting athletes of all disciplines to come out and play. This includes GTA Pesäpallo players, whose numbers continue to grow season after season. Pesäpallo was once a significant part of Canadian Finnish cultural heritage up until the 1990s, but since then the number of Finns playing in Canada has declined, making it harder and harder to catch a glimpse of Finland’s national sport being played here.

A small group of Toronto area athletes started organizing practices and games again in 2023. At least 14–15 players are needed for an effective practice game, so from the very beginning invitations were extended beyond the Finnish community to friends, colleagues, and hockey and baseball teammates.

Momentum was gained in 2024. It was greatly helped by the publicity surrounding Team Canada’s first-ever appearance at the Pesäpallo World Cup, featuring four Toronto-area players on the roster. Pesäpallo games became a regular routine for the Toronto-area players in 2025, with over ten games organized in Mississauga and Udora. More than forty different athletes have participated in the practice games so far, and the sport has been well received by everyone involved.

Pesäpallo Down Under

This year’s season is just around the corner, with expectations higher than ever. Not only is the Pesäpallo community in a strong position to build on the momentum of previous years and its growing pool of enthusiastic players, but the season will also end with a big highlight in October: The Pesäpallo World Cup in Sydney, Australia. The current Team Canada roster consists of eight GTA players, one player from Vancouver, and two Finnish-Canadian Pesäpallo players living in Finland.

Players and sponsors needed

SISU Athletic Club has provided financial support over the past few years by helping cover city field rental fees and assisting with equipment and materials. Despite this support, the activities remain fully funded by the team members. Representing Canada on an international stage is not only an honour, but also a responsibility that our team takes very seriously. The cost of international travel, accommodations, equipment, and tournament fees presents a significant financial challenge. This is where your support can make a meaningful impact.

We are seeking sponsorship to help offset these expenses. All funds raised will go directly toward supporting the team and ensuring that each athlete has the opportunity to participate fully in this unique and rewarding experience.

This season’s games are anticipated to start in early summer. New players are welcome, no experience required. Keep an eye out for more information on social media for times and locations.
