About Us
Vapaa Sana – Kanadan Sanomat is the voice of the Finnish-Canadian community. Building on decades of Finnish-language journalism in Canada, our mission is to inform, connect, and celebrate Finns and friends of Finland across the country.
Our Story
Founded under Vapaa Sana Press Ltd, our publication carries forward the legacy of Vapaa Sana and Kanadan Sanomat — two long-standing Finnish-language newspapers that have served the community for nearly 100 years. Together, they have chronicled the stories of Finnish immigrants, second and third generations, and the vibrant organizations, businesses, and individuals that make up the Finnish-Canadian experience.
Today, we bring that heritage into the digital age. Our online platform makes news, stories, and cultural updates accessible anywhere, anytime, for Finnish Canadians and those interested in Finland’s global connections.
What We Do
- News & Features: Covering community events, culture, business, sports, and international stories that matter to Finnish Canadians.
- Community Connection: Showcasing the voices of organizations, clubs, and individuals who strengthen our cultural ties.
- Bilingual Approach: Serving both Finnish and English readers, bridging generations and ensuring accessibility for all.
- Archives & Heritage: Preserving historical articles and materials to keep our community’s history alive for future generations.
Our Mission
We believe in the importance of independent journalism, cultural preservation, and community building. Our mission is not only to report on events, but also to create a platform where Finnish Canadians can share their experiences, ideas, and identity in Canada’s multicultural landscape.
